SOLANO SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL (SR2S) PROGRAM
Safe Routes to School (SR2S) in Solano County is a program of the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) that encourages children to walk or bike to school. The SR2S program offers a wide range of FREE programs, activities and events for schools. The number of children who walk or bike to school in the US has steadily decreased over the last 50 years. At the same time communities, including Solano County, are seeing increases in traffic around schools, air pollution, and increased childhood obesity. To help address these problems, the STA launched the Solano County Safe Routes to School program in 2008. In partnership with Solano County Public Health, the program brings together city planners, traffic engineers, law enforcement, educators and parents to create safer, less congested routes to school.
STA partnered with Planeteria Media from Santa Rosa to design and develop a website for this program. The goals were to:
- Attract new school SR2S sign ups
- Reach a broader audience of school administrators, law enforcement, parents and community members
- Provide a good resource for information
- Create awareness for healthier, safer and more active children
- Integrate more programs into existing schools
- Decrease of auto traffic around schools and air pollution
- Increase the amount of students walking and biking to school in Solano County
