Port of Galveston Unveils a Redesigned Website

The Port of Galveston, managed by Galveston Wharves, has launched a newly redesigned website in partnership with Planeteria Media. As one of the busiest cruise and cargo ports in the nation, the Port needed a digital presence as dynamic and reliable as its operations. The refreshed website delivers just that—streamlined, modern, and ready to serve diverse audiences.
About the Port of Galveston
Established as the second oldest port on the Gulf of Mexico, the Port of Galveston has evolved into a critical hub for maritime trade and tourism. Today, it supports major cargo operations, including roll-on/roll-off, fresh fruit, petroleum, and container shipments, while also ranking among the top cruise ports in the United States. With over 41,000 monthly visitors pre-pandemic, the Port needed a website designed for high-volume engagement and seamless functionality.
Project Goals
The redesign aimed to:
-
Replace a proprietary platform with a flexible, scalable CMS.
-
Enhance the visitor experience for cruise passengers, cargo clients, and the public.
-
Integrate essential third-party tools such as Swagit for board meetings and RezPort for parking reservations.
-
Ensure accessibility, security, and smooth operation during high-traffic spikes.
Planeteria’s Solution
Planeteria migrated and reorganized hundreds of webpages into a user-friendly structure supported by an open-source CMS. With a photo-forward, mobile-responsive design and robust search tools, the site is built for clarity and impact. Security patches, uptime monitoring, and role-based permissions provide stability and long-term scalability for Port staff.
Key Features & Functionality
-
Mobile-responsive design to serve travelers on the go.
-
Third-party integrations with Swagit streaming and RezPort parking reservations.
-
GIS integration with Esri ArcGIS for spatial data.
-
E-commerce capability for transactions.
-
Emergency alerts and banners for timely public updates.
-
ADA compliance and Google Translate to ensure accessibility.
-
Automated broken link audits and content scheduling tools for efficiency.
Project Highlights
The redesign places official parking front and center, making it easy for cruise passengers to find, reserve, and trust Port-managed parking. Enhanced navigation, customizable subscriptions, and a robust procurement section also give businesses and residents transparent access to key Port activities.
Looking Ahead
This launch is only the beginning. Planeteria will continue supporting Galveston Wharves with hosting, security, and ongoing improvements, ensuring the Port’s website evolves alongside its operations. The site now reflects the Port’s role as both an economic engine for Texas and a welcoming gateway to the Gulf.
